Rumble in the Jungle: ATV Adventure Park

Crazy times.

A last minute inclusion to Team Salsa, ATV Division, I woke up at 8am on Saturday morning wondering what the hell I got myself into. I should be sleeping since I already knew it would be arguably the busiest month of the year for me.

Since I don't listen to the warning in my head, now I'm somewhere deep in Kampung Kemensah, behind Zoo Negara. Driving up there was a nightmare since the narrow roads were made for All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) A THIRD THE SIZE OF MY CAR. Anyways, we got up there without much hassle, parked our cars precariously on the ledge of a cliff and proceeded to check out what an ATV Adventure Park was all about.

We received our training on how to operate the ATVs. Unlike motor bikes, ATVs were simple but powerful machines, with hair-raising torque. We then proceeded to drive in circles around base camp as a test run. No problems for me, but some may find this little beast slightly daunting during the test run. No worries there. We live and we learn!

There were 3 packages: RM 100, RM 150 and RM 300, depending on difficulty and duration. We took the RM 150 package and proceeded to head down the intermediate trail. However, this fine morning was a little different. It was raining. Yes. Raining. How cool is that? ATV in the jungle with rain? I felt like Rambo. The only problem is I couldn't snap many photos. My Lowepro rain cover came out for the first time (Hello!) and we took about an hour to get to the designated checkpoint. Thank God by that time, the rain had stopped and I could finally bring out my camera.

The designated point had a cool waterfall for us to rest up and bathe in. As you can see from the photos, I did not do much bathing. After about 40 minutes or so, we headed back to our ATVs for the ride home.

The ride back was faster. By then we had already got used to the handling of the ATVs. Nasty little buggers. Once again, I took anchor position and took the opportunity to shoot photos of the lovely jungle trail. Of course I intermittenly paused in awkward position to do that. Note to photographers: YOU CANNOT SHOOT AND RIDE AT THE SAME TIME! To do that would be foolish, dangerous and amusing for me.

Of course to celebrate our achievement, Team Salsa feels the need to jump for joy. Go Team!
